The ‘Latent Seasons’ series is a body of paintings created for ‘The Fifth Season’ exhibition. Each painting is based on an AI generated image of the seasons, along with with a fifth season ‘imagined’ by a machine. The work is exploring the way in which we may experience ‘new’ seasons in the future.

The series is painted with a combination of compounds that are able to remove pollution from the air, meaning the paintings – which are painted in reference to an an artificial form of nature – act in the same way as a real plant or tree, and is able to clean the surrounding environment.

In this series, the style of the images generated by the algorithm coincidentally recalled Chinese painting. As it happens, in Chinese traditional thought there are already five seasons: the fifth being ‘Long Summer’, between summer and the autumn.
