The Fifth season is a conceptual musical artwork with accompanying visuals composed in collaboration with an AI algorithm. Sections from the classic piece ‘The Four Seasons’ by Vivaldi were taken by the artist and input into a GAN (Generative adversarial network). The AI was able to generate a ‘new’ season based on the combinations of summer, winter, autumn and summer. 

In the same way, an AI was used to create new images of the seasons, based on a dataset that mixed photographs of the four seasons together. The inspiration for the piece is the idea that climate change will not only effect our relationship with our environment, but also with culture. The ‘seasons’ that Vivaldi described will in the future be unrecognisable to us. The piece being made in collaboration with an algorithm itself raises questions about creativity and our relationship with machines.
